Rhineland-Palatinate, a showplace of European culture located in the far west of Germany, has a lot to offer – the Cultural Heritage Directorate General shows you where!
They include the top-class state museums in Koblenz, Mainz and Trier as well as the state's many castles, palaces and antiquities.
Start your exploration by discovering ancient Roman buildings such as Porta Nigra, the amphitheatre and the Viehmarkt thermal baths in Trier, Middle Rhine castles such as Pfalzgrafenstein or Stolzenfels Castle and Villa Ludwigshöhe Castle as well as grand castles Trifels and Hardenburg in the Palatinate. Rhineland-Palatinate has as many as four UNESCO World Heritage sites: Speyer Cathedral, the Roman Monuments, Trier Cathedral and Liebfrauenkirche, the cultural landscape of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley and Upper Germanic & Rhaetian Limes.
Welcome to Fortress Ehrenbreitstein
It has an absolutely magical attraction: the Fortress Ehrenbreitstein in Koblenz situated on a rocky crag high above the the place where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet.
3,000 years of stronghold history are waiting to be discovered here. The view from the stronghold's castle courtyard stretches across the Rhine River, Deutsche Eck and the Moselle River, right into the Neuwieder Basin. The fortification, built by Prussians, was once one of Europe's largest strongholds: meter-thick walls, moats, tunnels, bridges and gates still characterise the huge building complex today.
In store for you: a unique cultural ensemble in the Unesco World Cultural Heritage of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley.
Spacious parks and the castle grounds, the unique, historical architecture of the stronghold, the thrilling panoramic view, and cultural and culinary journey delights make your visit an experience.
Koblenz State Museum, at home in the fortress, has exhibition premises around the topics of enjoyment, archaeology and photography, and is just as much worth a visit as the special exhibitions held here annually. From 9 April to 29 October 2017 Koblenz State Museum is showing the exhibition "Cowboys & Indians. Made in Germany".
Enjoy a ride in the cable car across the Rhine in one of the 18 panorama cabins - from Deutsche Eck to Fortress Ehrenbreitenstein.
"Cowboys & Indians. Made in Germany"
Special exhibition in Koblenz State Museum from 9 April to 29 October 2017.
Since Buffalo Bill's 1890/91 Wild West-Show went on tour in Germany, images of cowboys and Indians have been rooted in our everyday culture more than in virtually any other country. Empire, Weimar Republic or National Socialism – they were always a projection screen.
In the 1960s, while Frenchman Pierre Brice rode on horseback for what is good in the west, in the east it was the Serbian Gojko Mitic, who warded off "capitalism, the law of the jungle" as a chief in the DEFA films. In the west it was "Western clubs" that boomed, also as a sign of the friendship between Germany and America, whereas at the same time in the east it was "Indian" clubs that provided an escape from everyday life under the SED regime. The parody "Der Schuh des Manitu" (Manitou's Shoe) was bound to enjoy all-German success in 2001.
The exhibition traces the German perception of "redskins" and "palefaces" on an area covering around 800 square metres. More than 300 displayed objects, film and audio stations, a prairie landscape, a tepee village and western city scenes have been put together for child and adult Wild West enthusiasts.
