Following the recent economic changes in the UK and rising uncertainty about travelling to a growing number of overseas destinations, families are opting for staycations and holidays closer to home this summer. For a great value summer holiday in the British Isles, the Bailiwick of Guernsey offers beautiful beaches, family-friendly attractions, a wide variety of hotels and restaurants, all at just a short flight from the mainland. Guernsey and her islands of Alderney, Herm and Sark, use the British pound, so visitors to the island don't need to worry about exchanging currency or fluctuating rates, meaning that they can budget accordingly and have more to spend than if holidaying with the euro.
Here's a selection of the best last-minute family breaks to Guernsey this summer. For more great value holidays to Guernsey, visit www.visitguernsey.com
Island Hopping around the Bailiwick
Guernsey is a great launch pad for exploring the smaller Channel Islands of Herm and Sark, a 20 and 45 minute boat ride from Guernsey, which are car free and focus on preserving island life. Kids particularly love the sense of adventure that comes with jumping on a ferry to another island, and exploring the coastline.
Channel Islands Direct offers a seven-night island hopping holiday from £649, including three nights' accommodation at the 3* Hougue du Pommier, Guernsey, two nights at the 4* White House Hotel, Herm, and two nights at the 4* Stocks Hotel, Sark. The offer is priced at £665 by sea from Poole or £715 by air from Gatwick or Southampton, travelling from 1st July – 31st August. This offer is per person based on two adults sharing, and includes breakfast and a meal on the first night in Herm and Sark. www.channelislandsdirect.co.uk
Sunset Sailaway Breaks on Herm Island
The tiny island of Herm with beautiful sandy beaches and spectacular coastal scenery lends itself to total relaxation, where even playing the radio in public areas is banned. Measuring just a mile and a half long and half a mile wide, the island lies three miles off the coast of Guernsey and has a population of around 60 people, plus a dozen or so Guernsey cows. The White House Hotel is the island's only hotel, renowned for good food and wine in a beautiful setting, and has no clocks, televisions or phones in the bedrooms to provide the ultimate escape from everyday life.
Throughout September, The White House Hotel is offering two or three night Sunset Sailaway Breaks from £235 per couple per night, with an additional third night at £85 per person per night. The break includes dinner, breakfast, return Travel Trident tickets, a bottle of Sparkling wine and a box of chocolates. www.herm.com
Free night in August at Sunnydene Country Hotel
The three star family run Sunnydene Country Hotel is a particularly popular choice with returning visitors to the island, offering heart-warming hospitality at outstanding value for money. Situated away from the hustle and bustle in the south of the island the property is located within walking distance of both Petit Bot and Saints Bay - both secluded bays perfect for exploring. The hotel has large shady gardens and a heated outdoor swimming pool, as well as an 18 hole putting green.
Throughout August, GuernseyTravel.com is offering three nights for the price of four at Sunnydene Country Hotel, with packages from £212 per person by ferry from Poole Harbour, or £263 per person when flying from London Gatwick. Direct flights are also available from many regional airports. The price includes return transport from the UK and breakfast. www.GuernseyTravel.com
Beach break packages at Cobo Bay
Cobo Bay Hotel on the west coast of the island sits on one of Guernsey's favourite family beaches, Cobo Bay, which has clean, white sand and shallow waters, as well as plenty of amenities, with a beach café, tea rooms, convenience stores and restaurants, including some of the best fish and chips on the island. The three star family-run hotel opens its Beach Terrace in the summer months, offering al fresco dining with unparalleled sea and sunset views.
Until 2 October, Cobo Bay Hotel is offering four and five night summer break packages from £575 per room for a four night long weekend, arriving on a Thursday. The Sunday Saver five night package is priced from £679 per room arriving on a Sunday until 29 September.
