Getting Whizzy in a Twizy on the Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight has turned a deeper shade of green thanks to the arrival of a fleet of 15 fun-packed Renault Twizys, now available for hire from just £49 a day.

Already successfully promoting itself as Bicycle Island the Isle of Wight has recently come-up with a host of eco-friendly and sustainable modes of transport for its “drive less see more” campaign.

The Renault Twizy is just the latest of these and, despite being a quadricycle as opposed to a bicycle, it adds to an overall choice of some great green transport, which recently saw the addition of 25 Peugeot electric bikes under the Red Squirrel (http://www.nutsnotto.co.uk) label…and might yet see the concept broadened to include a pack of Renault Zoes.

For now, however, it's all about the Twizy - officially launched on the Island in mid-March.

An electric powered 20bhp two-seater it accelerates from 0-30mph in around four and a half seconds, has a range of around 50 miles, and turns heads everywhere it goes on the Island.

The colourful fleet of Twizys are currently lined-up at the Red Jet Hi-Speed ferry terminal in Cowes.  If you're aged over 21, and have a driving licence, you can either make your way to the waterfront at Cowes, or simply step straight off the catamaran and into your quadricylce.

And in the same way that the dozen-or-so charging points across the Island are currently being expended, other pick-up and drop-off points for the Twizys will be announced shortly.

The whole experience couldn't be much easier - or more fun.

Don't take a large picnic basket, however.  Once your passenger has settled into the back, there's just enough room for a couple of small bags, and a compact camera.  And if the weather's not as nice as Nice, you might need to keep your waterproof, or windcheater, close to hand.
