New-Look Road Ahead Launched

RACQ The Road Ahead

Queensland's largest circulating magazine The Road Ahead has been re-launched with a new look and feel.

As the flagship publication of Queensland's peak motoring body RACQ, The Road Ahead is a strong voice for RACQ members and advocate for Queensland motoring, reaching more than one million Queenslanders every month.

“The main focus of the work we do in Publishing is to add value for members and support the membership and advocacy activities of RACQ,” Executive Manager Publishing Jim Mathers said.

“Maintaining a contemporary and highly engaging Road Ahead magazine is crucial to our success.”

In creating the new-look magazine, Road Ahead Graphic Designer Brad Ferguson said the goal was to produce a title that could compete with any commercially-driven magazine, while respecting the history of the magazine and the loyalty of its readers.

“With a 75-year heritage, I had no doubt that many readers had a long-term emotional investment with the magazine,” Mr Ferguson said.

“I wanted to be sympathetic to what they loved and had come to expect, while ensuring the magazine had a contemporary feel.”

That included a complete refresh of the magazine's comprehensive Travel section to give the reader a real sense of each destination. Dramatic imagery, location maps and detailed information in addition to the main feature were just a few of the tools Brad used to further enhance the section.

“The Road Ahead already had an impressive Travel section, so rather than redesigning it from scratch, I used some additional contemporary design techniques to improve the experience for readers,” Mr Ferguson said.

“The Road Ahead hasn't just changed cosmetically – we've made sure the content reflects what readers want,” Executive Manager, Publishing, Jim Mathers said.

“Readership research over many years has consistently shown that travel content is the 'most read' content in the magazine and our aim is to deliver the best reader experience possible.”

The Road Ahead has an audited print circulation of 850,747 (CAB Sept 2015) and a readership of 1.3 million, based on annual RACQ reader research. In addition, the digital version of the magazine circulates to approximately 170,000 people. The Road Ahead is also produced in app mode for iOS and Android tablets and content is extended through a dedicated website www.racqliving.com.
