About Château Pichon-Longueville Lalande
Château Pichon-Longueville is one of the great vineyards of Bordeaux. Run by the same family for over 250 years, the Châtteau has a history that dates back to the 17th century when between 1686-1689 Pierre de Rauzan Mazure and his wealthy merchant associates bought the Bordeaux vineyard plots near the lordship of Latour and created a vineyard, l'Enclos Rauzan. Later his daughter Teresa received the dowry for her marriage to Jacques de Pichon Longueville François, President of the Parliament of Bordeaux; and thus began the history of the great vineyard.
Since the eighteenth century, this great wine has experienced a strong female influence, with the main directives given by the Baroness Pichon-Longueville. Therese de Rauzan, Germaine Lajus Mary Branda Terrefort then took over the management of the vineyard up to the eve of the French Revolution. When just 19 years old, the young Baron Joseph de Pichon Longueville succeeded his mother Marie de Terrefort. When he died at the age of 90, his long reign has passed through three revolutions, five kings, two republics and an empire. Despite the difficulties, he continued relentlessly improving the quality of the wine. His efforts were rewarded in 1855 by the classification under Napoleon III when the Château received the rank of a second classification.
Château Pichon-Longueville Lalande is known as one of the most important “Super Seconds.” This 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac estate has made tremendous strides in the last 20 years, due largely to the energy, drive and ambition of May-Eliane de Lenquesaing, who took over the property in 1978.
The 75-hectare Pichon-Longueville Lalande property produces an average of 36,000 cases per year. Located in the east of the Pauillac appellation, the vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 45%, Merlot 35%, Cabernet Franc 12%, Petit Verdot 8%) lie on deep gravel beds which are underpinned by clay and then sandstone and limestone (with part of the vineyards actually residing in the St-Julien appellation). The wine is fermented in stainless steel cuvées and then matured in oak barriques (of which 50% are new) for 18 months. Pichon-Longueville Lalande is not as powerful or as tannic as some its Pauillac neighbours, mainly because of its relatively high Merlot content. As per “Berry Bros. & Rudd”, in its best years, it is “one of the most exotic and voluptuously scented wines of the Médoc.” At least a decade of cellaring is recommended before the wines should be opened.
