Spring time in Hortobágy National Park
Hortobágy is the largest continuous natural grassland in Europe. The Hortobágy National Park, established in 1973 is the country's largest protected area of 82 thousand hectares and was declared a UNESECO World Heritage site in 1999. Located close to Debrecen, Hungary's second largest city, spring is the ideal time for a visit as its warming up on the plains and people can enjoyable a horse ride or carriage ride to see the wide variety of species and habits. One of the highlights is seeing the famous Hungarian cowboys showing off their extraordinary equestrian skills, such as making a horse lie down still, a skill needed many years ago when the area could be teaming with bandits.
People have been grazing domestic animals on the plans for more than two millennia and the visitors centre tells the story of what it was like to live on the plains through the ages. No visit is complete without sampling the herdsmen's dishes at one of the inns or 'csárda'. These typical watering holes offer a unique kind of hospitality and evoke the world herdsman-turned outlaws (betyár) who roamed the puszta in bygone eras. Parts of the thematic “trail of inns,” Kadarcsi, Meggyes and Hortobágy Big Inns also function as museums.
Visitors can stay in Debrecen, which is just 30 minutes' drive away or at one of the hotels/inns in Hortobágy. Direct flights from London Luton to Debrecen with Wizzair (www.wizzair.com) start from £110 return. For tourist information on Debecen and surrounding areas visit http://tourinform.hu/english
