Although the online do-it-yourself mantra has become a major factor in the local and international travel industry, the world of cruising still relies heavily on the expertise and experience of travel agents.
Internationally, it is estimated that at least 70% of cruise bookings are made through travel agents, with repeat and first time cruisers preferring to channel their arrangements via travel professionals than using other booking methods.
According to Cruises International CEO, George Argyropoulos, the same applies in South Africa where the peace of mind of booking through an agent carries a lot of weight. Agency knowledge about ships, cruise lines and destinations is a major advantage.
“This is especially true for people going on a cruise for the first time, but it's also the case with many experienced cruising enthusiasts who rely on agents to source the best special deals and itineraries, as well provide information on the latest offerings and trends,” he said.
In 2015, it is expected that 22 new cruise ships will be launched to tap into the international cruising market which saw more than 22 million people take cruises in various parts of the world during 2014.
Hugely important for South Africans, with the rand's current weakness, is the ability of agents to source all-inclusive cruising packages which offer excellent value for money as well as a variety of on-board discounts and complimentary offers.
“When most individuals or corporates consider a cruise for leisure or business purposes, they invariably use the services of a reliable travel agent for sound advice on options and itineraries, as well as handling the booking and payment process,” Argyropoloulos said.
It is estimated that around 41 000 South Africans embarked on cruises last year and this number is expected to increase this year with travellers realising the value, variety and convenience of cruising, compared to many land-based options.
“Travel agents remain a vital link, delivering an important educational service in a sector that is changing all the time and continually offering exciting new features, facilities and destinations throughout the world,” added Argyropoulos, who's company represents nine premier cruise lines.
